Day 14 - June 8 - Out in the Open
The day began with tea, just like every other day. Don't take that the wrong way, I'm not complaining at all, this tea is amazing. I am worried that I'll have a real caffeine addiction before this is all over. For breakfast, we had eggs, toast, idlis and mangos! It was the first time we've had mangos here and they were so so good.
After breakfast, Anna, Caroline, and I discussed our project budget together and then I took a car ride to another village to buy a chicken for lunch.
In the States, a lot of things happen behind the scenes. Trash is collected in homes but dumped in huge pits away from people. Domestic violence happens all the time behind closed doors. Racism and gender discrimination are still alive. Meat production happens in factories and you get a nice clean piece of protein on your plate. In India, these issues are a lot more visible.
In India, trash collects on the street. Gender discrimination is out in the open. Despite the governments efforts, many people still place a large value on the caste system. And chickens and other animals are often slaughtered in front of you when you buy meat.
I'm not placing judgement on either culture, but it is very interesting to see these stark differences.
Later in the evening we went as a team to play some frisbee with the kids and we had dosas for dinner at the CASA center! Ending the night with some card games on the porch.
Thanks for reading, Harsha

The scaffolding you will find across India. Just imagine how scary it looks when it's a building higher than one story.

Sunset on the walk home. The skies here have really been magnificent. Nerding out on cloud formations...
