What is Projects with Under-served Communities ???

PUC is a project-based, service-learning organization that is a collaboration between the Cockrell School of Engineering and School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin.

The program is centered around a community-driven, need-addressing project that is proposed by an under-served international community. With the help of an in-country NGO facilitator, PUC teams are able to connect with the community. Students spend a year working with the community and NGO to plan the project, fundraising, and finally traveling to implement the project over the summer. During this year-long course, PUC seeks to develop students' technical and leadership skills by giving them the opportunity to provide much-needed services to under-served communities throughout the world.

Assisted by a board of faculty and industry advisors and guided by formal instruction, students are responsible for all aspects of the project, from the drawing board to implementation. Students communicate and develop the design, organize logistics and budgets, and collaborate with the community and NGOs in order to develop a viable, sustainable solution to best meet the needs of those who they are serving.

PAST Projects

Since 2010, PUC has implemented successful projects around the globe. Below are some sample projects that have been completed by other UT students:

  • Construction of a solar-powered water tank and distribution system

  • Connecting a suburban school to the municipal water line

  • Designing brick stoves using an innovative approach to burn waste sawdust

  • Building a public latrine

  • Designing and constructing stadium seating for an outdoor theater and sports arena for a school

  • Make improvements to a community clinic and center

  • Build a water harvesting system in a rural community

PUC's Impact Worldwide

We are committed not only to completing a sustainable and successful technical project in the regions we work with, but also to building lasting partnerships with those communities.
